Ahoy, me hearties!
As the tides have shown us in years past, many a shanty singer needs a fair stretch to ready themselves for the grand voyage to Melbourne (for tall ships do sail at their own pace). Though it be not yet carved in stone nor made official, we’re plotting another rollicking Shanty Singin’ Eve at PAX Aus this year. If ye and yer crew be eager to join the revelry, send word our way.
This year, we’re set to steer a new course, in the true spirit of shanty clubs and fairness. We’ll be tryin’ somethin’ a bit different, with mates both on and off the stage takin’ turns, givin’ every soul a chance to let their voice ring out across the seas. Aye, each and every one shall have their moment to shine and share their tales in song!
So, ready yer finest shanties and brace yerselves for an unforgettable night of music and camaraderie. Hoist the sails and join us for a grand time!
THE DETAILS:
Panel Info:
PAX Aus – Sea Shanties You Say? Yahaarghh!
When:
Saturday? October? 2025
Where:
The Wombat Theatre (at the MCEC)
What:
Iain & Joel have been organising a shanty segment for every GenerOZity since March 2017 (GenerOZity 2) and love to try to get a whole collection of shanty singers each year for their tavern crawl.
I’m in, what do I do?:
Confirm with Joel on Facebook and he’ll add you into a group chat!
The Plan:
Show up at 8:00pm outside the front of the “Wombat Theatre” near the Merch Desk. Come have a cheeky drink and a chat ahead of the singing starting.
Be prepared to possibly spend the whole evening only leading a shant or two (Our aim is to try to get everyone to sing at least one, then as many ‘first time’ singers as we can fit in)
Iain & Joel will guide everyone through the night (checking in to see who is keen to sing next / announcing special surprises as the segment roles on)
On the night, we will have 2Bratty who will be our “Donation Announcer” e.g. any donation that comes in to request a sea shanty, she will put that sea shanty at the top of the list for us to sing next (A list we will be following for charity!)
There will be one VERY SPECIAL sea shanty that requires a Banjo, Accordion and Hand Drum – This song is an unreleased sea shanty from the game Sea of Thieves, a song we have the honor of singing at PAX Aus this year. When the time comes to sing this, we want everyone to be super duper at their best because the video clip will be sent off to Rare Ltd to say thank you.
Afterward the 2 hours is up, we will move everyone to a nearby pub and keep singing & drinking until the night is done.
